Office shown before and after a layered lighting plan

Room · task · budget

The Osram Lighting Guide turns a broad brief into testable choices

Use four selection inputs to compare families without confusing high efficacy with a complete lighting outcome.

Build a comparison baseline

This worksheet is a discussion aid, not a photometric calculator. Entering a target does not prove maintained illuminance; room geometry, reflectance, depreciation and distribution still require project calculation.

Compare these four outcomes

Distribution

Match beam angle and candela pattern to mounting distance and target size.

Comfort

Review shielding, luminance, common sightlines and UGR context.

Color

Choose CCT, CRI and available TM-30 information for materials and skin tones.

Operation

Confirm dimming range, protocol, zoning, sensor behavior and service access.

Three briefs, three different priorities

Open office

Context: screens and collaborative tables share one ceiling. Method: compare wide direct distribution, vertical light and daylight-linked control. Decision: protect screen comfort and task visibility before chasing maximum lm/W.

Retail wall

Context: displays change by season. Method: model aiming points, beam spread, CRI and TM-30 data. Decision: retain adjustment while setting glare limits from customer sightlines.

Hotel corridor

Context: low ambient levels must still support orientation. Method: test vertical illumination, warm CCT and emergency requirements. Decision: separate atmosphere from mandatory life-safety design.

Trade-offs to document

Higher efficacy may reduce source size or color-quality options; tighter beams increase aiming sensitivity; integrated drivers simplify form but can complicate component replacement. DALI-2 offers addressed control and diagnostics where supported, while 0-10V may suit simpler analog zoning; neither protocol is automatically the lower-cost choice after wiring and commissioning are counted.
